Apple applies for facial recognition patent, wants to let iDevices get to know you better
Your momma always said your handsome mug would take you places. Now it might allow you to access your iPad. An Apple patent application released today describes a facial recognition system that requires minimal computing power, and works whether you’re indoors or out — we don’t use our tablets and phones in a photo booth, after all. The technology works by comparing a current image of your mug to a reference model user profile made using “high information” portions of the human face, like eyes and mouths. Translation: it’ll take a picture, compare it against the pictures associated with various user accounts on the device and decide if the two images are similar enough to grant you access. Because this is just an application, it’s safe to say we won’t be seeing this kind of facial recognition in iOS anytime soon, but let’s hope it works better than the ICS version if it does.
Update: An important thing to note is that Apple applied for this patent long before Android’s Face Unlock debuted a few months back. The paperwork was first submitted on June 29th, 2010 — it’s just now being disclosed to the public.

MotoGP Silly Season 2013 Starts Early – Yamaha Keen To Hang On To Lorenzo
With all the debate and discussion over the changes coming to MotoGP for 2012 – 1000cc machines, the appearance of the Claiming Rule Team machines, arguments over exactly what the Aprilia bike is, and the ongoing talks over the imposition of a rev limit and spec ECU for 2013, it is easy to overlook the fact that it is not just the bikes which are changing. All four of MotoGP's so-called Aliens are out of contract at the end of next season, as well as just about every other rider on the MotoGP grid. With the last five years utterly dominated by the Fantastic Four – Jorge Lorenzo, Dani Pedrosa, Valentino Rossi and Casey Stoner winning all but four races in 5 season – the key for any factory to securing a MotoGP title has been having at least one Alien on its books.

Selena Gomez: Looking Back On Her Busy 2011
Teen superstar made headlines with her thriving career as a singer, actress.

Selena Gomez will watch the ball drop as one of the many A-listers set to hang out with MTV on New Year’s Eve during “NYE in NYC 2012.” As one year ends and another begins, it seems like a great time to reflect on the very busy year that the teen superstar and the show’s host is bidding a fond farewell to.
When the year kicked off, Gomez was already knee-deep in reports that she was dating pop heartthrob Justin Bieber. And while her love life dominated many of the headlines, her thriving acting and singing career also managed to make a few of its own.
In March, she dropped her single “Who Says,” and explained that she wanted to empower fans with the feel-good track. “So I thought it was a sweet message,” she explained. “With bullying, with cyberbullying, with all the negativity that is in high school and dealing with things, you’re already trying to figure out who you are; it doesn’t help when people are constantly trying to tear you down. And I’m dealing with it, of course. I’m going through it as well.”
As she continued to prep for her 2011 tour and album release, she also focused on her acting career. In April she dropped her comedy “Monte Carlo.” “It’s a fun movie about three girls who try to go on a vacation,” Gomez said of the big-screen summer romp. “And it ends up being horrible and my character gets mistaken for a British heiress, and they figure, ‘What better way to make a horrible vacation amazing than to be a British heiress?’ ”
She finished filming her Disney show, “Wizards of Waverly Place,” in May. And after being briefly hospitalized in June, she was back on the scene with her album When the Sun Goes Down. For her next video for “Love You Like a Love Song,” the singer took fans on a wild karaoke-fueled bender through the ’80s. She followed up the clip with stints as the VMA pre-show host and then hosted the MTV EMA in November.
Right before the holidays, she released one more video, the party clip for “Hit the Lights.” “This one’s saying that I’m at the point where I’m having fun with it. I’m not trying to be older. I’m not trying to be younger. I’m trying to explain where I’m at in my life, and I feel like that’s what describes it, and having fun with my friends and it was beautiful and it was simple,” she told MTV News. “I thought it was nice.”
In 2012, she’s set to film her “raw” role in the drama “Spring Breakers,” and as she looks back on her own 2011 she explained that she felt “humbled” by it all. “I feel like this approach of this year, I wasn’t expecting any of the things that happened,” she said. “And so I just kind of want to go into the end of this year and the beginning of next year just excited and in a good place and not planning anything.”

What’s the deal with the orientation of the camera? This, along with blurry video etc. seems to be epidemic. It doesn’t take long to review the video you just shot and make sure the orientation and clarity are correct. If not, do it again!
Horrific…and an obvious pet peeve of mine.

You kind of can’t go wrong when the soundtrack you’ve put together for one of the most eagerly anticipated literary adaptations in years kicks off Yeah Yeah Yeahs singer Karen O’s take on Led Zeppelin‘s “Immigrant Song.”
Fans heard the throbbing industrial take on the rock classic cooked up by former Nine Inch Nails mastermind and O when a trailer for the David Fincher-directed “Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” leaked back in May. And on Thursday, Oscar-winning industrial-rocker-turned-film composer Reznor and musical partner Atticus Ross unveiled the full track list for their “Tattoo” score album. The follow-up to their award-winning “The Social Network” score was a labor of love, according to a post Reznor put up on the NIN site on Thursday announcing the disc. “For the last fourteen months Atticus and I have been hard at work on David Fincher’s ‘The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo,’ ” he wrote about the American version of the tale of pierced and punished hacker Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara) and her muckraking journalist compatriot Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig). “We laughed, we cried, we lost our minds and in the process made some of the most beautiful and disturbing music of our careers. The result is a sprawling three-hour opus.” The album will be released on iTunes on December 9 in two versions. Right now, you can download the Karen O song on iTunes when you pre-order the 39-track album. That download purchase will also give you a link to the eight-minute “Dragon Tattoo” trailer, for which Reznor and Ross created a unique score.
But, if you visit the NIN online store, Reznor is offering the soundtrack in a variety of forms, from a free six-track sampler to a deluxe 3,000-piece limited-edition signed $300 package with your choice of MP3 formats; the full album on six pieces of 180 gram vinyl; a deluxe book package with a metal cover; an exclusive custom 8 GB metal razor blade USB drive pendant containing the full album; and a fold-out poster. Add a Windows 8 user tile to your Windows 7 taskbar

Now that Windows 8 images have begun leaking out, it’s only a matter of time until developers start releasing mods for Windows 7 which mimic upcoming features. Over at Into Windows, they’ve spotted one such mod already.
In the earliest Windows 8 images, we saw Windows Live integration on the taskbar. In the far right corner, there’s a user tile displayed. If you’d like to do the same on Windows 7, download Taskbar User Tile from DeviantArt user AngelWZR.
Once installed, your current picture will appear on the taskbar. Click it, and a menu appears which allows you to log off, switch users, and access the control panel. Right now, the mod only works if your taskbar is displayed on the bottom of your Windows desktop.
